Top 7 Intriguing Benefits of Gratitude You Didn’t Know About

Many great folks lay emphasis on gratitude. For example, Oprah Winfrey advises us to always write down five things we are thankful for before we sleep.  According to her, thankfulness creates more goodness in one’s life. For as she said, ‘The more thankful I became, the more my bounty increased. That’s because – for sure – what you focus on expands. When you focus on the goodness in life, you create more of it.’

I thus had to practice gratitude and research about it because many great folks, especially Oprah Winfrey, encourage it. It then dawned on me that gratitude is important because of the following reasons.

Gratitude:

1.Increases Hope

Since gratitude makes you focus on the wonderful things life has given you, it gives you hope as it shows you how life always ensures that you have amazing things to be thankful for. In other words, it gives you hope by showing you the many ways in which the universe/life/God provides and cares for you.

2.Improves Your Health

Gratitude is good for your health since it boosts heart health and makes you sleep better. Moreover, gratitude, like most positive emotions, improves your health because it boosts your immune system and lowers blood pressure.

3.Fosters Empathy and Compassion

Thankfulness reminds you that you are more blessed than billions of people across the world. It reminds you that you have more to be thankful for than orphans, beggars, the ill, the deceased, and so on. For this reason, it makes you aware of other people’s suffering and forces you to help them.

4.Gratitude Raises Your Vibrational Frequency

You are a vibrational being, emitting a particular frequency. This frequency determines what you’ll attract in your life. Gratitude raises this frequency hence enabling you to attract good things in your life easily. For as for Rhonda Byrne, the television writer and producer, pointed it out, ‘Gratitude will shift you to a higher frequency, and you’ll attract much better things.’ 

Besides Rhonda, Joe Vitale, a renown author, also noticed that ‘when you move into an active state of sincere gratitude, your whole being lights up and your energy quickens, and this high vibration acts like a magnet to bring your good to you.’

5.Makes You Focus on the Present Moment

Since gratitude makes you focus on what you have right now, it makes you more present.

6.Shifts Your Focus from Your Problems

When facing difficulties, gratitude shifts your focus from your problems to your blessings. For this reason, it prevents you from contracting mental conditions – such as depression and chronic anxiety– which arise when you focus on your problems.

7.Eliminates Envy

You become envious towards people when you focus on the negative side of your life. For this reason, gratitude eliminates envy because it shows you that, just like the people you are envious towards, you are also blessed with wonderful things.

Conclusion

You must make thankfulness a year-round habit if you want to experience the above, and many more benefits of gratitude. Remember to point out three to ten things you are grateful for every day, and reflect on how millions of people across the world don’t have them even though they want them.

Who Am I? - Discovering My True Self

Recently, I wondered who I really am after realizing that I am neither my body nor my mind. I discovered that my body has its own mind as it performs bodily tasks on its own. It fights diseases, digests foods, and detects temperature without my help. Besides, I discovered that some bodily functions, such as hair growth, skin cell growth, and muscle movement continue after death. For this reason, it dawned on me that I am not my body because it can somehow function without me.

Besides my body, I realized that I am not my mind because my mind can think on its own. Sometimes I might want to quiet the mind through meditation, but it continues thinking. Also, I might want to focus on positive thoughts but my mind refuses to cooperate. I thus discovered that the mind is not me. Instead, it’s a gift from Infinite Intelligence that enables me to think and imagine.

Realizing that I am neither my body nor my mind enlightened me that I am a spiritual entity in a human body. I discovered that I am an individualized part of the Great Spirit that created the universe. This insight made me leap with joy as I realized that just like a drop in the ocean possesses all the properties of the ocean, I also possess all the qualities of the Great Spirit because I am part of it.

I then realized that I seldom enjoyed life because I never identified myself with my true identity. Instead, I always identified myself with my body, mind, and ego. I worried when my mind entertained anxious thoughts, and I felt bad about my body because it didn’t qualify for the society’s beauty standards. Primarily, I discovered that I seldom enjoyed life because I paid too much attention to my social status, self-image, and financial status, which are all products of the ego.

For this reason, my primary mission from today onwards is to transcend my body, mind, and egoic-self, and live as my true self because I know my life will completely change if I live as my true self.

You must also join me in my mission because our sufferings will end when we live as our true selves. Nothing in the external world will disturb our peace of mind, and we’ll interpret everything positively when we live as our true selves. Moreover, although we might continue loving our material possessions, we’ll detach from them and therefore, we won’t feel bad when we lose them.

We’ll also stop dwelling on our difficulties, and we’ll stop living in fear. As well, we’ll experience mysterious synchronicities and our minds we’ll be quiet.  Lastly, solutions to difficulties will become clearer, and we’ll always be in a state of Love, Trust, and Surrender.

Spiritual Exercise without Action is Dead

The popularization of the importance of spiritual exercises such as yoga, meditation, and prayer has resulted in many folks practicing them without embracing spiritual virtues. People think doing these exercises alone will enable alignment with Infinite Intelligence/God. They are unaware that the exercises cannot enable alignment if not accompanied by spiritual action.

Apostle James noticed an almost similar phenomenon when he wrote, ‘faith without action is dead.’ He observed how early Christians prayed and praised God, yet they never demonstrated their faith by helping the poor. He thus questioned, ‘What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?’

Similarly, several modern folks allocate time for meditation, praise and worship, prayer, and yoga but fail to demonstrate faith in Infinite Intelligence through their actions. They then wonder why they seldom experience the greatness of the Infinite Mind. Besides, they wonder why their lives seldom change despite performing several spiritual exercises.

Spiritual exercises are dead without action. Although they enable us to access the Infinite Mind within, the access is short-lived. For them to enable permanent access, they must be combined with spiritual actions such as forgiveness, love, humility, compassion, honesty, and so on because these deeds clear the negative energies within hence enabling alignment with Infinite Intelligence, which is positive energy.

It’s thus pointless to practice spiritual exercises and still embrace hate, jealousy, pride, self-centeredness, and other negative qualities as most people do today. Modern folks go to the church/mosque/temple to pray/meditate but still display negative qualities in their relationships with other folks. ‘They thoroughly cleanse the outside of the cup, and ignore the inside.’ For this reason, they never achieve higher states of consciousness that allow them to experience the Infinite Mind.

We –the enlightened ones – shouldn’t be among these folks if we aim to fall in alignment with Infinite Intelligence. We must accompany our spiritual exercise with action for us to experience the goodness and greatness of the Infinite Mind in the land of the living.
