Although many influential people support optimism, research reveals that realistic pessimism is necessary. A realistic pessimist is an individual who understands that life is uncertain. He admits that human beings lack the ability to accurately know what might happen in the future.
Realistic pessimism allows one to realize that anything can happen in life. It enables an individual to be mentally prepared for bad experiences, reducing the impact that unfavorable life events could cause on his mental state.
It’s the overly optimistic person who becomes depressed when something bad happens because he believed things will go as planned, and he never realized that things can go wrong in this unpredictable world. It’s easy for this individual to quit during setbacks because he never prepared himself for unexpected events.
I am not arguing against optimism because optimism is good as it motivates us to work hard. I just want you to give room for pessimism. Be optimistic but realize that not everything will happen according to your plans. This approach enables you to take precautions and makes you ready for obstacles.
Some people use pessimism as an excuse for laziness. They claim that working hard towards something is unnecessary because bad things will happen anyway. This is a wrong way of applying pessimism. A person who adopts this mentality is lazy.
It’s true that the world’s events are uncertain, but what is certain is that hard work, persistence, perseverance, determination, self-confidence, and self-discipline guarantee prosperity because no obstacle can overcome these qualities.
Don’t worry when you become pessimistic because it’s your mind’s way of telling you that you lack the power to accurately predict the future. The only future you can predict with accuracy is the past. Realize that you live in an unpredictable world where anything can happen. Prepare yourself mentally for obstacles, but have faith that everything will be alright.
